Snoring is dangerous!

Snoring also presents other dangers to you and your loved one. Heart attacks, nervous breakdown and stroke are just some examples of conditions affected by snoring and lack of sleep.
If like me you’ve tried several things to eradicate your snoring but nothing helped you may also have considered expensive and frankly dangerous surgery. I know several people who have undergone this radical step only to find themselves worse off afterwards physically as well as financially.

What causes snoring?

It’s pretty simple really, snoring occurs when there is some kind of blockage in the breathing passage when you fall asleep. The airflow in your bronchial passage becomes irregular due to the constriction that occurs when your throat relaxes.

Disrupted airflow then causes the soft palette in the breathing passages to flap causing the snoring sound. It’s like a door banging open and shut in the wind.

Most find it difficult to eliminate their snoring despite the fact it only has one main cause. The reason being that there is such a variation in the types of blockage, and most people have more than one type causing their snoring.

Some examples are:
1) The soft tissue at the back of the throat may be weak and close down when sleeping. This is the most common cause of sleep apnea. This is a very serious condition where snoring is just one sign of throat and sleep distress.
2) In some a weak tongue falls back into the throat and blocks it. This is very common if you sleep on your back but can also happen when sleeping on your side.
3) A tense jaw may press on the breathing passage narrowing it. The sufferer is probably not aware of tension in their jaw muscles until identified however when pointed out they can be helped to relax.
4) A floppy, weak soft palate tends to vibrate like leaf in the wind. Some surgeons recommend dealing with this by cutting of part of the soft palate or implanting small plastic or silicon rods to make it firmer (Simply moving it in the right way few times a day would on the other hand keep it firm and prevent it from flopping and be far less traumatic).
5) Any muscle that is tense or weak around the breathing passage can put pressure on it and make you snore. A common cause is tension in the shoulders and neck or heavy drinking (alcohol).
6) Things that build up in the throat like far or tar from cigarettes also has the potential to cause a person to snore.
